Sometimes I find that my penchant for trying to understand my students’ needs far beyond those of the classroom, conflicts with my need to get them to turn in assignments so that I can gauge whether they are learning or not. Most of my students work and the responsibility they show to their work life falls in the same conundrum as mine. So it turns out that of a total of 45 students, I have approximately 10 who turned in some work in the beginning of the semester, a little more towards the beginning of october and not much else. I had to call on two, specifically, who are on the verge of failing (actually, they are) and met with two more who need help.
How much slack is too much slack? Does my propensity for procrastination befall them as well? Am I indeed, passing on the “gene of putting off” to them?
