Happy first of March!
Mărţişor (martsishor) is a Romanian holiday that celebrates the beginning of Spring. Mărţişor is a diminutive word of March in Romanian (Martie) and means little march. According to Wikipedia until 1701 Mărţişor was also the celebration of the new year. It is symbolic of new beginnings and renewals.
When I was little my paternal grandmother would give my cousins and I a little token tied in red and white string. Call it an amulet that would protect us all year long. It came attached to a safety pin and we were supposed to wear it the whole day. If March 1st would fall on a Sunday, we would go over to my grandparents’ house and eat vinete and drink Țuică, even us young kids!
