This rant is based on a conversation that I had with my friend Bill (not H, not D, but C, you know who you are). We were talking about how we are both sick AND tired of being surrounded by people who seem to be completely self-involved. There’s a feeling, and it could be because we both live in New York City, that most people seem to be concerned with their own stuff.
I know, this sounds rather simplistic, but the observation is the following: whatever actions you try and perform during the course of the day, you will inevitably interact with someone (unless you’re a Unabomber-type hermit). The interaction, will most often be about some kind of an exchange: information, money, lesson-type thingy. I guarantee that the person you interact with will more than likely be trying to gain something, take something. Yes, yes, in most cases it’s a warranted exchange but haven’t you all found that people these days seem to be concerned with themselves exclusively?
I feel like I’m surrounded by people whose concern seems to be exclusively about them….only them. And no, I don’t mean my blog readers though the thought as has crossed my mind that with all this writing about ourselves, yours truly included, that we are turning into self-involved pricks. They told us that the 80s were ME years…perhaps those are back? Have you run into any of these folks as well? Any thoughts?
