Cow
I have found the most fun site for writing in quite sometime. I’m a lazy writer: I either go for the gusto of a small thought in my head or it takes me days to compose and edit, in my head, before committing anything to paper or screen. I’ve tried to trick myself into writing with little exercises I’ve learned along the way, but none seem to work for me. They always drag me down anxious paths of memories and those are so hard to write about.
Well, the other day, while on a quest to get some tips to increase readership, I stumbled up on the site oneword. You have 60 seconds to write about the word that appears on the screen, then you submit. When I visited today, the word was “cow” and this is what I came up with:
“Her big brown eyes squinted in the sun. I thought of a name for her, that auburn colored cow in the field. I thought of German and French names, after all I was in Switzerland. But none came to mind. She was a beauty…even when she stuck her tongue out and licked a fly out of her nose.”
Now, clearly, this does not a story make, but it’s definitely a good starting point. I could develop that little short tidbit into something more consistent. Or not. If you want to try it out, go visit the site. It’s not as easy as you might think, but definitely fun!
