Welcome to one and all to my online musings and commentary…
Thought for the day:
As I watched and listened to the speeches at the Democratic convention this evening, a commercial struck me. It was for Office Depot and it showed a *very* young daughter praising her mother with “You Rock!” (or some such) for buying her a computer. While I find nothing wrong with technology in the home, or daughters praising their mothers…the commercial made me think specifically about how buying power seems to be reducing the “appropriate age” for events. Since when does a 10 year old get a computer for school??? Since when is there elementary school graduations?? I recently heard from a friend that her neighbor’s kindergartener had a prom. Prom????
What kinds of consequences are we facing if we continually lower the age for special events. Is it no surprise that drop out rates are increasing? Of course, there are many other factors that influence students to drop out of high school, but if youngsters today cannot wait for special events, what kind of adulthood are they waiting for?
